Certification and P.G.I.
(Protected Geographic Identification)
The certification of quality is a national seal of approval for a product. To get it, the product must respect specific quality requirements defined by the CNCL (National Comity of Certification). These requierements are stricter than the minimal norms imposed by the french regulation.
For a rice from Camargue, each company has to hold a quality book and respect the quality requirements defined by the institution in charge of the certification. In our case, this institution is the rice-grower association (Syndicat des riziculteurs).
Every company of the “Rice of Camargue” network has to respect the quality requirements. An independent institution of certification control all the requirements specified into the quality book applied which are formalized through a system of quality for the rice made in Camargue. This institution is the BVQI France of Bureau Véritas.
Every company has to justify all input and output of products and the number of tags and packaging so that the tonnage produced by rice-grower corresponds to the sells. Controls are made at all levels.
Rice growers have to follow specific rules to bring their production to a certified silo. Certified silos have to justify all their sells, rice buyers have to belong to the “Rice of Camargue” network to get the seal of approval and the logo of certification may appear on the packaging after agrement of the BVQI France which certifies the company judged worthy. Moreover, the fraud squad carries out sampling and analyses the product to insure the quality of the product. The BVQI France realizes also analysis once a year using samples of reference at every conditionner’s.
Companies which are not keeping with these rules are removed from the certification. Thus, they are no more allowed to sell products with the designation “Camargue”. The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is a protection given by Bruxelle to a product of a specific region. However, there is no significant difference between rice from Camargue and other rice. The designation is based on the fact that Camargue offers a particular land and a special climat, in particular the wind which by its drying effect protects the rice from diseases like the black-spotted grain due to a pathogenic mould.
Therefore, Europe gave to the Camargue a protection. Only rice produced in Camargue having the certification of quality and sold by a company having the certification too may obtain the designation “Camargue”.
All these procedures are expensive but the rice of Camargue worth it.
“Your rice is excellent, it is exactly what we need to accompany sauce meal” Pierre Gagnaire.
“Your rice, we tried it by different ways, it always behave perfectly in the plate” Michel Nave.
“Your rice is extraordinary, we do what we want with it” Vérot de Bercy.
These comments have been quoted for the variety “Ariète” a long rice witch grows very well in Camargue.
